Class of 2004 earns $3 million in scholarships

Eureka Springs High School Senior Class of 2004 has won more than $3,000,360 in scholarships and awards to help them further their education.

Announcements of the awards were made Wednesday afternoon during a school-wide assembly.

Cash Covington, Patrick Ross and Isadora Albert won the biggest scholarships.

Covington has won a four-year academic and basketball scholarship to Spring Hill College, near Mobile, Ala., with an estimated total value of $108,568.

Ross has enlisted in the Marines, asking to serve in intelligence work. His scholarship and training programs will total approximately $75,000, according to Gunnery Sgt. Randall Pelham.

Albert has won a $10,000 scholarship, a $4,000 Bonners Scholarship and a $500 art scholarship, all renewal for each of four years, totalling approximately $58,000, to Warren Wilson College in North Carolina.

Valedictorian for the class is Colin McKenzie. Salutatorian is Tiffany Lockhart.

Graduating National Honor Society members are Betsy Brower, Lily Bullard, Sarah Clark, Tesa Clark, Barrett Featherstone, Samantha Lester, Joel Martin, Shelby Neal, Covington, McKenzie and Lockhart.

Special recognition, in addition to scholarships and awards, was also given.

Covington and Lily Bullard were named Renaissance Man and Woman. This award is for best all-round student who do well in classes, participate in a lot of clubs and athletic competitions and continues to be liked by his/her peers.

Nominated for the $1,000 ESHS Alumni Scholarship to be presented during the annual banquet May 29 are Sarah Clark, Samantha Lester and Ryan Ryan.

Named for membership in the Society of Secret Scholars were Willie Maddox, Patrick Deschner, Barrett Featherstone and Stephen Pendergraft.

This is a group of students who make good grades but don't want anyone to know for fear that his or her reputation might be sullied.

Dynamic Duo - this award recognizes two people who have worked together for so long, they probably couldn't succeed as well in school without one another. Two such partnerships were recognized: Vanessa Williams and Briana Dodge, Tim Watson and Dillon Bartholomew.

The Virtual Student, the one who functions best through computer applications, declared by overwhelming vote, is Patrick Ross.

Ross was also named for a pin and as the EAST Lab's GPS/GIS Guru and for a Spanish II certificate.

Who? Me? is an award for a student who consistently declares assignments to be either undoable or beyond his or her capabilities. These students are always surprised when they get a good grade.

Tommy Blair began the year with small accomplishments and got an A on his semester test in Linnea Koester's class.

Shelby Neal was recognized for the "Eye On The Prize" award. This student has been motivated, focused, an achiever and one who has known why he or she was in high school and has "stayed on top of things."

Principal David Childers presented the "Epiphany" Award for the students "who have a sudden realization that they can prepare for their future, that their future has endless possibilities and any or all of them are attainable. These students take a keener interest in their studies and are suddenly more focused than they have been in the past."

The Epiphany awards went to Kyle Earls and Jennifer Kurzek.

Earls also received a $250 Marta Jordan Memorial Scholarship and a certificate in geology.

Childers also presented a new award this year - Principal's Award to Chris Williams. He also got a certificate for Spanish II and a pin for his work in ceramics.

Teresa Darity was named winner of the first $200 Life Skills Scholarship.

Additional scholarships and awards went to:

McKenzie - $500 Carroll Electric Scholarship; Marine Scholastic Award; $9,000 for four years Hendrix College Founders' Scholarship; AP English IV Certificate; calculus and Latin pins.

Lockhart - $3,000 academic scholarship to Union University in Tennessee; certificates in calculus, and AP chemistry; a pin for college bound English IV.

Brower - $1,000 Presidential Student Service Scholarship for volunteering 925 hours of service and a Student Service Award from Eureka Kids; $1,000 President's Scholarship to Northwest Arkansas Community College; four-year $2,500 Level II Scholarship and $1,905 non-resident scholarships at Missouri Southern State University; certificate in world history; pin in oceanography.

Bullard - Pin in Spanish III and ceramics.

Sarah Clark - $500 Basin Springs Masonic Lodge scholarship; $1,000 Eureka Springs Professional Women scholarship; $500 Holiday Island Rotary Scholarship; $500 Van Pelt Athletic Scholarship; four-year $2,500 Stewart Title Company scholarship;four-year 47,000 Presidential Scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas; four-year $3,750 tuition waiver scholarship to Oklahoma State University; pin for calculus.

Tesa Clark - Certificate in English 12 and business transition math; pins for EAST lab, drawing and photography.

Covington - Distinguished Athlete Award from the U.S. Marines; Certificate for trigonometry and pre-calculus; pins for AP U.S. history, web design, oceanography; special recognition as Deep Water Scum Scraper in oceanography; special recognition as web master.

Featherstone - $500 Eureka Springs Masonic Lodge scholarship; $500 Holiday Island Rotary Scholarship; $100 Junior Bank Board Scholarship from Arvest Bank of Eureka Springs; certificate for oceanography and Spanish II.

Lester - $1,000 Eureka Springs Professional Women Scholarship; $500 Holiday Island Rotary Scholarship; $500 Wayne and Francis Brown Scholarship; certificate for AP English IV; pin for Latin, anatomy and physiology; Elks Student of the Year; $6,000 four-year Hendrix College Trustees' Scholarship; Semper Fidelis Award for Music from the U.S. Marines.

Martin - $500 Bank of Eureka Springs Scholarship; $200 Junior Bank Board Scholarship from Arvest Bank of Eureka Springs; $500 from Carroll County Physicians; $500 Van Pelt Athletic Scholarship; $380 Douglass Memorial Scholarship; Elks Student of the Year; certificate for calculus; pins for AP chemistry, physics, Spanish II.

School Counselor George Seigler said 10 to 12 students will win $20,000 four-year Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarships.

He said the total in local scholarship money awarded this year is $45,510.

The total institutional scholarship money awarded to Eureka Springs High School seniors is $264,650.
